Past and Present

Founded in 1946 by Virgil W. Bork, the Conservatory provided the opportunity for serious-minded students to pursue a musical education on the post-high school level, leading to a diploma. The Conservatory emphasized training to the student who desired to pursue music as a profession. In addition, the Conservatory encouraged those who desired to study music from the cultural aspect or simply as a hobby. Recognizing the interrelationship of music and the other arts, the Conservatory coordinated its programs with offerings in dramatics, the spoken word and the visual arts. A list of staff reads like a "who's who" of music education from that period.

The Present Conservatory

Philosophically, the Conservatory reopened in line with its history, now offering education in the arts to all ages and levels. Although no longer giving a diploma, a certificate of attendance is presented to each student who completes a semester course. Our teaching staff is drawn from professional musicians/artists, arts-related personnel, private teachers of excellent reputation, and retired and active NJ State Certified teachers.

Students (other than early childhood) are scheduled for a private or class lesson each week, and a recital is held at the end of Fall and Spring semesters. Private lessons are scheduled to fit the availability of both teacher and student. Private lessons can start at any time.

The Conservatory supports and enriches home schooling and the local school music program. Audition preparation is emphasized. Occasional master classes are offered.

Our philosophy is student-centered. We utilize the existing interests of the student as the springboard to teach them the materials and techniques required for competancy in their chosen discipline. We want to create ways for the student to acheive his/her highest level.

Instruction is offered in all instruments/mediums/disciplines in which excellent teaching staff can be recruited.
